Johan BIDAURREkoa: GOGOETAK / Johan of BIDAURRE: REFLECTIONS

AZALPENA:

Gaur egungo Euskal Herria bi estatutan banatua dago. Iparraldea Frantziarren esku, eta Hegoaldea Espainiarren esku. Eta Hegoaldea bi zatitan banatua ere, Ekialdea eta Mendebaldea. Hori aspalditik datorren gauza da. Nafarroako estatua, laburbilduz, hiru fasetan bereganatu zuten Espainiarrek eta Frantziarrek. 1200 urtean Mendebaldea hartu zuten Espainiarrek. Eta neuk borroka hartan parte hartu nuen, Donostia defendatuz. 1512an Ekialdea hartu zuten berriz ere Espainiarrek. Eta azkenik, 1620an Frantziarrek Iparraldea hartu zuten. Beraz, aholkatuko nizueke lurralde hauei horrela deitzea, Iparraldea, Ekialdea eta Mendebaldea, zatiketa inposatuak direla nabarmenduz.

EXPLANATION:

Today’s Basque Country is divided into two states. The North is into French hands, and the South into Spaniards hands. And the South is also divided into two pieces, the East and the West. This is something that comes from long ago. The Spaniards and the French appropriate Navarre, in short, in three phases. In 1200 the Spaniards took the West. And I was involved part in that struggle, defending Saint Sebastian. In 1512 the Spaniards again took the East. And finally, in 1620 the French took the North. Therefore, I advise you to call these territories like that, the North, the East and the West, noting that there are imposed partitions.

DONOSTIA ZER DA, HIRI ZAHARRA ALA BERRIA? / WHAT IS SAINT SEBASTIAN, AN OLD OR A NEW CITY?

MOTAKO GAZTELUA: DONOSTIA ZER DA, HIRI ZAHARRA ALA BERRIA?

Bideoaren transkripzioa

Gaur ikusten dugun Donostiak apenas ditu berrehun urte, Napoleon-en garaiko gudaldietan suntsitu egin zuten erabat, bueno, ez, erabat ez, 1813ko sarraski kriminal hartatik kale bat libratu zen, egun hartako izena hartzen duen kalea hain zuzen ere, Abuztuaren 31. Frantses tropen babesleku zen Motako Gaztelua ere salbatu zen. Motako Gaztelua da hiriko altxorrik zaharrena, eta Donostia hiriaren sorrerari dago lotuta. XII mendean eraiki zen, Nafarrak ginenean, erresumaren barnealdeko merkatariei itsasorako irteera emateko. Donostia itsasoari baitago lotuta, bere sorreratik. Egungo Donostia hiri berria da, polita, ikusgarria, hala eta guztiz ere Motako Gaztelua ikustea ez da erraza. Donostiako eraikin zaharrena izateaz gain, handienetakoa ere bada. Baina ezkutuan bezala daukate gordeta. Lehen Urgull Mendiko tontorrean gaztelu Nafar ikusgarri bat zegoen, orain izugarrizko hormigoizko masa baten azpian ezkutatuta dago. Akaso, Donostiarrek beren jatorria ezagutu ez dezaten.

CASTLE OF THE MOTTE:  WHAT IS SAINT SEBASTIAN, AN OLD OR A NEW CITY?

Transcription and translation of the video

The Saint Sebastian that we see today is just two hundred years old. They destroyed it completely in the Napoleonic Wars, well, not completely, from that criminal extermination of 1813 only one street remains, precisely the street that has the name of that day, 31 August. The Castle of the Motte that was refuge of the French troops remains as well. The Castle of the Motte is the oldest treasure of the city, and is linked to the creation of the city. It was built in XIIth century, when we were Navarrese, in order to give the internal traders an access to the sea. Since Saint Sebastian is linked to the sea since its creation. The Saint Sebastian of nowadays is a new city, nice, spectacular, however it is not easy to see the Castle of the Motte. Besides being the oldest building, it is one of the largest. But they have it as in hiding. At the time, there was a spectacular Navarrese castle, now it is hidden under a huge concrete mass. Perhaps, so that people from Saint Sebastian do not know their origins.
